More than just a martial art, Judo is a fun, challenging educational experience (and a full-body workout). After growing our judo program over the past few months — including bringing the U.S. Olympic Judo coach in for a guest seminar — we’re thrilled to offer our first Intro to Judo series starting in April!
We’ve specifically designed our Intro series to give people a successful introduction to the art and to our academy. We cap it at 20 students, to maximize learning. Our next Intro to Judo classes will begin Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Classes will take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 p.m., with a Saturday option as well. If you have a challenging schedule, hit us up! Our academy specializes in welcoming new folks who want to learn, and we’re open 70 hours a week.
This Intro to Judo class is a safe, effective and fun introduction to this amazing martial art. It’s an 8-week session, with the curriculum developed by our instructors specifically for beginners. To sign up for our April Intro to Judo class, click this link.
If you’re already training judo and want to join our regular judo classes, please sign up for our Judo Only Membership. Regular Bellingham BJJ members can take judo classes at no charge, but if you don’t have a Bellingham BJJ membership, you can train judo here for the low, low price of $30 a month. This is an incredible deal at less than $3 per judo class.
We wanted to keep the cost low for this introductory program, so the charge is just $150 for eight weeks with no contracts, fees or commitments. That price you get the entire two months of training plus a gi uniform to use during the course of the class, so no additional expenses. That’s eight weeks of training plus a free loaner gi for just $75 per month. To sign up for Intro to Judo, go here. For questions, please email jeff at bellinghambjj.com or see someone at the front desk of the academy.
The judo classes are led by Jacob Standaert. Jacob Standaert has a 2nd degree Blackbelt in Judo with a brown belt in BJJ. He has lived in Bellingham since 2009 and practiced Judo and BJJ since 2010.
The head instructor for Bellingham BJJ is Jeff Shaw. Here is more about Jeff and our academy, and what people of all experience levels are saying about our classes.
We believe in providing resources from students to keep learning when they’re not on the mat, too. That means we have notes and video for every jiu-jitsu class we teach. After you sign up, you’ll receive a welcome packet in your email with all the information you need to know. If you’d like to check that out before you begin, here are some basics.
BEFORE CLASS STARTS, HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
Please wear athletic attire: fight shorts, bike shorts, or other shorts without zippers and such can be worn beneath the jiu-jitsu gi. You may wear a shirt or rash guard beneath the gi as well, but this is not required, and is a personal preference. Please trim your nails and be clean (i.e., have showered) before class. Here is the school’s values statement. Here are some school policies.
We’re developing a resource for new people called the White Belt BJJ Starter Kit. It’s a series of blog posts about common topics and questions. Check it out: we’re adding to it all the time!
